Synergism:
The Poetics of Fragment and Form
Ekaterina Khromin’s artistic method, which she calls Synergism, merges her technical expertise as an art conservator with a deeply personal and expressive visual language. Developed over many years, Synergism is a hybrid practice that combines low relief (bas-relief) with traditional painting, unified through innovative adaptation of conservation techniques. Drawing on her knowledge of advanced restoration processes—particularly re-lining—Khromin transfers sculptural reliefs, built from found and fragmented objects, onto canvas or board. These surfaces are then activated through layers of pigment and traditional painting, allowing each piece to exist between dimensions: both tactile and pictorial.

Khromin’s compositions are dense with meaning. She intensifies every square inch of the surface to deliver the maximum amount of visual and emotional information. The use of object fragments creates a puzzle-like experience for the viewer, inviting closer inspection and personal interpretation. Through this semi-abstract visual language, she narrates her own life story while opening pathways to universal themes—war and peace, displacement, humanity, and belief.

Synergism is a poetics of memory and material: each object carries its own imprint of time, yet becomes part of a larger, unified statement. Through this synthesis, Khromin transforms broken remnants into powerful vessels of meaning. She hopes that her small voice—layered with material, memory, and method—will join the greater chorus speaking out against war and calling for stability, compassion, and peace.
